DEPARTMENT / DIVISION:
Public Works
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Vehicle Maintenance Superintendent. This is highly skilled and supervisory maintenance and repair work of City-owned vehicles and equipment.
SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervision is exercised over more than five employees, including Mechanics, Service Workers and the like.
WORK PERFORMED:
Plans, organizes, schedules, assigns, and evaluates the work of subordinate employees; trains and counsels employees, as needed. Assures that proper safety procedures are followed and that appropriate safety standards are met. Prepares work orders; assures adequate supplies, materials and equipment; orders supplies and materials, as needed. Schedules vehicle maintenance and repair work for the vehicle maintenance shop; schedules work for other repair shops; orders specialized parts for vehicles; assists in the preparation of bid specifications for vehicles and equipment to be purchased. Prepares accident damage estimates for vehicles and equipment. Assists mechanics in their work. Maintains records of services performed. Utilizes diagnostic equipment and corrective tools including air impact wrenches, ignition scope, brake drum, rotor lathe, drill press, hydraulic press, valve grinder, torch welder, front end machine and wheel balance. Performs preventive maintenance inspections and troubleshooting inspections, evaluates conditions and determines extent of repair work to be performed. Drives/operates vehicles and equipment pre- and post-repair. Performs related duties as needed or assigned.
PARTIAL LISTING OF MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or vocational school and six years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel vehicles and equipment, including some supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which would provide the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Thorough knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools, materials and equipment of the automotive and mechanical trades. Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with vehicle maintenance and repair and of relevant safety standards and precautions. Considerable knowledge of effective supervisory practices and techniques. Ability to plan, organize, schedule, assign, and evaluate the work of subordinate employees. Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose problems relating to the safe and effective operation of gasoline and diesel vehicles and equipment. Ability to use and maintain bench and hand tools, machines and test equipment of the automotive and mechanical trades in a safe, efficient manner. Ability to perform manual labor as needed, including lifting/carrying automotive parts and other equipment weighing up to 100 lbs. Ability to drive/operate vehicles and equipment. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with other employees. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Excellent work history and attendance record. Possess and maintain valid Missouri Commercial Driver's License, class B, with passenger and tanker endorsements.
