Work is performed under the general supervision of an assigned shift supervisor or superintendent. This is journey level maintenance and repair work of City-owned vehicles and equipment.


    SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Usually none; although the employee may be required to provide guidance, training, and assistance to less experienced employees.


    WORK PERFORMED:
Services and repairs gasoline and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, rear ends, drive lines, clutch, brake and electrical systems, air conditioning and related equipment, fuel and cooling systems, hydraulics, and air brakes at a vehicle maintenance facility or the site of a vehicle breakdown in sometimes inclement weather. Performs wheel alignment and general overhaul of equipment including disassembly as required, repairing or replacing of damaged or malfunctioning parts or mechanical units, including camshafts, crankshafts, pistons, rings, connecting rods, bearings, valves, and lifters. Performs repetitive arm, wrist and hand movements while in the process of removing or installing parts and components while under vehicles in a prone position; under vehicles on a hoist or over a pit in situations where arms are extended overhead for several minutes at a time; or while climbing ladders to a height of approximately 12 feet and maintaining balance while testing/repairing wiring, lighting, etc. Maintains record of services performed. Utilizes diagnostic equipment and corrective tools, including air impact wrenches; ignition scope; brake drum; rotor lathe; drill press, hydraulic press; valve grinder; torch welder; front end machine and wheel balance. Performs preventive maintenance inspections and troubleshooting inspections, evaluates conditions and determines extent of repair work to be performed. Repairs, replaces, and adjusts braking systems, master and wheel cylinders, front-end assemblies, steering systems, suspensions, alignments, and the like. Repairs and services small engines such as chain saws and related equipment; may provide maintenance and repair work on buildings, fixtures, equipment, and the like. Performs related duties as needed or assigned.


    PARTIAL LISTING OF MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or vocational school and four years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel vehicles and equipment; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which would provide the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Considerable knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools, materials and equipment of the automotive and mechanical trades; and the occupational hazards connected with vehicle maintenance/repair. Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose problems in various types of vehicles and equipment in a municipal fleet while working independently; may occasionally work at the site of a vehicle breakdown, in sometimes inclement weather. Ability to use and maintain bench and hand tools, machines and test equipment of the automotive and mechanical trades in a safe, efficient manner. Must have good physical coordination, flexibility, balance and upper body strength to allow twisting and turning of upper torso while handling components weighing up to 60 lbs; ability to climb into and work in confined spaces such as engine compartments of large trucks, and hydraulic component storage areas on refuse vehicles and compactors; and lift, carry and maneuver parts, tools and components. Will occasionally lift and carry weights of 100 lbs. for short distances. Ability to tolerate moderate amounts of dust, grit, solvents, oil and other vehicle related products or byproducts normally associated with mechanic work. Ability to communicate effectively with supervisor, orally or in writing, to maintain reasonable safety and quality standards; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with other employees. Excellent work history and attendance record. Possess and maintain a valid Missouri Commerical Driver's License, Class B, air brake qualifed. Must also possess and maintain an excellent driving record.
