Regulations On Outdoor Burning

Outdoor burning for campfires or barbecues does not require a burn permit. Permits are required under a variety of circumstances including bonfires, landscape waste burning and heating for warmth of outdoor workers. All fires must be extinguished if dangerous conditions develop. The following conditions/restrictions must be met prior to issuance of a permit:

  • Fires shall not contain garbage, trash, any material made of or coated with rubber, plastic, leather or petroleum-based materials and shall not contain any flammable or combustible liquids.
  • Fires shall not be within 50 feet of a structure.
  • Fires shall be attended at all times.
  • No flammable or combustible materials shall be used to start the fire.
  • Fire extinguishing equipment shall be available for immediate use.
  • Wind speed shall be 10 miles per hour or less.

The permit is good for the date of issuance only. The permit doesn't not relieve the holder from any state or federal regulations. The applicant must have a DNR permit if required by the state. For more information or to have a permit issued, contact the Columbia Fire Department at 874-7556.
