The City Clerk is accepting applications for the following boards and commissions. Applications must be in the City Clerk's Office, 2nd Floor of City Hall, 701 E. Broadway, by 5:00 p.m., Friday, August 7, 2015. Applicants can either complete and submit the online application to the City Clerk directly from the internet or can complete the PDF format online and then print, sign, and submit it by mail to the City Clerk's office for processing.
BICYCLE/PEDESTRIAN COMMISSION: 1 vacancy with term to expire July 31, 2018. Must have knowledge of street construction and maintenance, and must be a qualified voter of the City. The Commission advises the Council on issues relating to sidewalks, walkways and trails. Monthly meetings held on the third Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m.
BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT: 1 vacancy with term to expire May 1, 2016. Must be a resident of the City of Columbia. The Board is responsible for hearing and deciding appeals where it is alleged there is an error in any order, requirement, decision or determination made by administrative official in the enforcement of the zoning, planning and subdividing ordinances. Monthly meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m.
BOARD OF ELECTRICAL EXAMINERS: 2 vacancies with terms to expire August 1, 2018. One must be a licensed electrician and the other must be a layperson. The Board is empowered to give examinations for electricians' licenses and certificates. Monthly meetings, when necessary, are held on the third Thursday of the month at 4:30 p.m.
BOARD OF HEALTH: 2 vacancies with terms to expire August 31, 2018. One must be a physician, and the other must have an interest in public health. The Board acts in an advisory capacity to the Council on matters pertaining to public health and animal control. Monthly meetings held on the second Thursday of the month at 5:30 p.m.
BOARD OF MECHANICAL EXAMINERS: 1 vacancy with term to expire June 17, 2016. Must be a layperson and a resident of the City of Columbia. The Board is empowered to give examinations for mechanical heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration licenses and certificates. Monthly meetings held on the second Tuesday of the month at 5:00 p.m.
BUILDING CONSTRUCTION CODES COMMISSION: 7 vacancies with terms to expire August 1, 2016, August 1, 2017, and August 1, 2018. One regular and one alternate member is needed from the following category: licensed electrician or electrical contractor. One alternate member is needed from each of the following categories: person experienced in fire prevention, professional engineer (experience in electrical/mechanical), master plumber, major contractor or superintendent, and minor contractor or home builder. The Commission periodically reviews and makes recommendations relating to building construction codes. Monthly meetings held on the fourth Monday of the month at 4:30 p.m.
CITY OF COLUMBIA NEW CENTURY FUND, INC. BOARD: 1 vacancy with term to expire September 30, 2017. Must have an interest in the future of the City of Columbia and the funding needs required to achieve future success, and must be a current resident and qualified elector of the City of Columbia. The New Century Fund, Inc. is a Missouri not-for-profit corporation. Meetings held on call.
COLUMBIA VISION COMMISSION: 5 vacancies with terms to expire December 15, 2015 and December 15, 2016 for coordinating committee members. One must be a qualified voter residing within the City of Columbia, two must be residents of Boone County, not residing within the city limits of Columbia, and the others can be qualified voters residing within the City of Columbia or residents of Boone County, not residing within the city limits of Columbia. Members must have demonstrated a commitment to the visioning process. Candidates will be evaluated on the ability to work with data and understand systematic relationships, the ability to work collaboratively, management skills, independence, existing memberships or positions, and contributions to the diversity of the Commission. The Commission tracks, monitors and assists with the implementation of the visioning process. Meetings held on the fourth Monday of the month at 5:30 p.m.
COMMISSION ON CULTURAL AFFAIRS: 1 vacancy with term to expire October 31, 2015. Must have significant knowledge and demonstrated interest in one or more areas of the arts, including music, dance, literature, visual arts, theater, folk arts, media arts, design and arts education. Must also be a qualified voter of the City, and shall not serve on the board of directors or be employed by any agency which applies for funding through the Commission or which receives funding upon recommendation of the Commission. The Commission advises the Council in all matters pertaining to the arts and cultural environment of the City. Monthly meetings held on the second Monday of the month at 4:15 p.m.
HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION: 2 vacancies with terms to expire September 1, 2018. Must have an interest in historic preservation and represent disciplines such as architecture, design, law, real estate appraisal, construction/general contracting or be a layperson active in historic preservation. The Commission makes recommendations to the Council regarding historically significant structures. Monthly meetings held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m.
MAYOR’S COUNCIL ON PHYSICAL FITNESS AND HEALTH: 3 vacancies with terms to expire November 30, 2015 and November 30, 2016. The Council educates the public about the importance of regular physical fitness activity and promotes, initiates and encourages local physical fitness and sports programs in the community. Monthly meetings held the first Tuesday of every even month at 12:30 p.m.
SUBSTANCE ABUSE ADVISORY COMMISSION: 1 vacancy with term to expire October 31, 2017. Must be a student under the age of twenty-five. The Commission promotes coordination of programs intended to prevent and eliminate alcohol and substance abuse. Monthly meetings held on the second Wednesday of the month at 12:00 p.m.
TAX INCREMENT FINANCING COMMISSION: 2 vacancies with terms to expire September 1, 2019. The Commission serves as an advisory body to the City Council as it relates to the consideration of tax increment financing proposals submitted by interested parties or initiated by any public agency in accordance with the Real Property Tax Increment Allocation Redevelopment Act. UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI EXTENSION COUNCIL OF BOONE COUNTY: 1 vacancy with term to expire March 1, 2017. Must be a resident of the City. The Council makes recommendations to the University in regard to the extension program and administers Boone County’s share of the cost of the extension services in the area. YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL: 1 vacancy with term to expire onFebruary 15, 2016. Must be a high school student between fourteen (14) and nineteen (19) years of age at the time of appointment. Consideration will be given to appointing a diverse group of members to include the various city wards, public and private high schools, and other elements of diversity whenever possible.
