For Immediate Release:
Fuel Spill Closes Bernadette Drive
On 10/09/2013, members of the Columbia Fire Department responded, at 2:33 pm, to a reported fuel spill near the intersection of Bernadette Dr and Tiger Ln. Crews arrived on the scene to find the fuel tank on an automotive transport truck had separated from the frame, been drug along the street, and had released 75 to 100 gallons of diesel fuel prior to being discovered. The trucking company "Thundercloud Express" out of Florida delivers frequently to Joe Machens Ford.
The fuel traveled the gutters down Bernadette and along the gutters on Tiger Lane. Several gallons of the diesel entered the storm water inlet near Ash Street. Because the fuel entered the storm water system DNR was notified and was responding to the scene. Crews used several bags of oil absorbent to absorb the fuel.
At the time of this release the sewer department was preparing to flush the storm-water inlet to move the product out of the pipes so it could be recovered. The street department was on the scene assisting with the cleanup and was preparing to use street-sweepers to clean up the roadway. Tiger Lane was closed during the incident and Bernadette was closed from Worley to Ash for approximately 2.5 hours. As soon as the roadway was cleaned up the truck was to be moved and repaired.
