This Saturday, 30 City of Columbia used computers will find new homes in Columbia households. The city, the Voluntary Action Center (VAC) and the Downtown Optimist Club partner each year to provide surplus (used) computers and equipment to eligible VAC clients as part of the Homes For Computers Program. The used computers are being given away to clients enrolled in VAC programs and who applied and were found eligible for the computer giveaway.
Clients who applied and were found eligible have been contacted by VAC and will receive their computer Saturday, Feb. 15. Computers will be distributed by the Downtown Optimist Club 9-11 a.m. at the Downtown Optimist Club Building, 1201 Grand Ave.
This year's program also included a partnership with the Columbia Area Career Center that assisted in preparing the computers for distribution. The Career Center, located at 4203 S. Providence Road, is now a Microsoft Registered Refurbisher.
The Homes for Computers Program was approved by City Council December 2003. This year's program will bring the number of donated computers to 380.
Questions about the giveaway should be directed to Jackie Wilmes, staff member at the Voluntary Action Center, at (573) 874-2273.
