The city of Columbia recently received a $10,000 grant from the Missouri Department of Conservation for the purpose of inventorying trees in the public right of way, according to city arborist Chad Herwald. These grant funds were used to commission a study by the Davey Resource Group from Ohio.
Davey Group inventoried 2,356 trees in an area encompassed by Stadium, Providence and Broadway. Results from the inventory showed 91 different species, which were rated from very good condition down to dead/need replaced. One hundred forty-one trees were recommended for removal and 1,692 trees were recommended for cleaning and pruning.
City staff will work to remove the hazards and replace some of the trees. Grant funds covered 95 percent of the inventory cost, with a 5 percent match provided by the city. The inventory is the first phase of the project, and city staff will follow up with future plans to implement the recommendations made by the Davey Group.
